Common Surgical Errors

When a patient requires a surgical procedure, they are informed about the inherent risks associated with any surgical procedure.

iStock_000044824338_Full.jpgVirtually all surgeries carry a small risk of anesthesia reactions, blood clots, infection, cardiovascular complications and healing complications, that risk is amplified when doctors and other medical professionals are not careful.

Patients who undergo surgery, however, do not usually anticipate surgical errors. They believe that the surgeon and the medical team performing the procedure are competent, experienced and prudent enough to perform the surgery without committing a surgical mistake.

Prior to surgery, a doctor is supposed to fully evaluate a patient’s current health and medical history. They should also have a thorough understanding of the patient’s aesthetic goals. He or she should make sure that the procedure planned is safe, appropriate, and in the best interest of the patient.

Unfortunately, surgical errors are not as uncommon as many would like to believe. Thousands of people are injured every year by medical negligence. Medical negligence, or malpractice, involves a medical professional’s failure to exercise the skill, care, and prudence necessary to prevent causing a patient injury.

Surgical errors are some of the most shocking and devastating of all medical mistakes and include:

  • Organ puncture of perforation
  • Spinal cord injuries in surgery
  • Bowel perforation
  • Anesthesia problems
  • Gastric bypass surgery malpractice
  • Surgery on wrong organ or wrong side
  • Delayed surgery
  • Prolonged surgery
  • Incorrect incisions
  • Unsterile equipment

Some cases of medical malpractice involve surgical instruments or sponges being left in the patient, causing serious post-operative damage. In addition, substandard after-care can lead to infection, septic shock, delayed healing, and other life-threatening medical consequences.

While surgical errors can be made during any procedure, they are more likely during laparoscopic procedures, gastric bypass surgery, plastic surgery and obstetric procedures.
