Hyundai Recall: Defective Seatbelts

Hyundai Recall: Defective Seatbelts

Thousands of people are injured every year in the United States because of a defective product.

The good news is that product manufacturers are held to high standards of care when designing, assembling and selling their products; they are held liable for injuries that result from use of their products. They are legally liable to pay damages if the use of their product results in an injury to a consumer. In these situations a personal injury lawyer should be by your side to make sure those responsible pay.

This includes automobiles – Safety is an important consideration when buying a car. In recent years, Hyundai vehicles, with substantial good looks and great warranty, have become a popular choice for consumers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2011 and 2012 models due to a seatbelt problem. According to reports, the rear center seatbelt which uses a release mechanism that detaches the lap and shoulder portion at the lower anchorage point does not comply with U. S. safety regulations.

Hyundai is asking, through a petition, that the NHTSA amend the recall to exclude vehicles already delivered to owners. They believe the action is “inconsequential as it relates to motor vehicle safety.”

The recall includes 14,728 Sonata Hybrids that have been sold and 1,633 that remain in showrooms. Hyundai has no plans to send out recall notices to more than 13,000 Sonata Hybrid owners until after the petition has been resolved. However, dealers are replacing the center rear seatbelts of those vehicles still in showrooms.
