I Think I Have A Food-Borne Illness

A food-borne illness is an illness resulting from the consumption of contaminated foods that contained bacteria, fungi, a viruses or parasite. It is also known as food poisoning.

Common symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramping, vomiting, nausea, headache, fever, and body aches. These symptoms don’t usually appear right after consumption. They can appear in days or even weeks at times. In addition, they can last from a few hours to as long as a few weeks.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 48 million food-borne illnesses occur in the United States every year. More than 100,000 people are hospitalized while several thousand die after eating contaminated food.

In addition, the CDC estimates that about 10 million of the illnesses are caused by food-borne pathogens, including:

  • Salmonella (more than a million illnesses every year)
  • Norovirus (most common – responsible for more than 5 million illnesses each year)
  • E. coli (over 170,000 illnesses each year)
  • Campylobacter (over 800,000 illnesses each year)
  • Listeria (one of the most lethal – more than 1,500 illnesses)
  • Botulism (rare – about 100 cases reported each year)

Foods most commonly contaminated include, but are not limited to: home-canned vegetables, pork, ham, smoked or raw fish, water, under-cooked eggs, raw milk, meat products, and poultry. People can get food poisoning by eating at a restaurant, when on vacation, or sometimes it happens when the source of where the product comes from had the bacteria, whether it may be from animal or canned food.
