General Motors Company Recall Timeline

General Motors Company Recall Timeline

General Motors Company has recalled more than 20 million vehicles this year due to a variety of safety concerns. 17.7 million of these defective vehicles were sold in the U.S., posing a safety hazard for an incredibly large number of drivers.

GM alleges that the defective car parts have led to 31 crashes and 13 deaths, but the death toll is likely to rise. Reuters estimated the death toll was as high as 74, and the Center for Auto Safety estimates 303 fatalities.

Of all the recalled parts, the defective ignition switch that triggered the recalls back in February is considered the most deadly. The ignition switch in several million U.S. vehicles contains a defect that can cause the switch to move out of the “run” position when extra eight is added to the key ring or the car encounters rough road conditions. This causes the engine to turn off, cutting off electrical power and leaving the driver without airbags or power steering.

If you or a loved one has experienced unexpected, life-threatening engine stalls, you may be entitled to damages. Contact Welebir, Tierney & Weck today for a free case evaluation.

Compensation for Victims

Under California law, you are entitled to certain damages if your car is manufactured with a defective part. With the help of a lawyer, you could win damages for:

  • Medical, incidental, and hospital expenses (past and future)
  • Physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, and physical impairment ( past and future)
  • Loss of earnings or earning capacity (past and future)
  • Punitive damages for egregious misconduct
  • Wrongful death

Contact a lawyer immediately if you or a family member were involved in a car accident with one of the listed vehicles.

In June 2014, GM announced plans to develop a compensation program for those who have lost family members or sustained physical injury due to the defect. The fund will be headed by Kenneth Feinberg, who directed the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund and the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, which benefited the families of the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting victims. The GM fund is expected to begin taking claims in August 2014.
