Pursuing A Lawsuit : Riverside Courts Budget Boost

Good news for the San Bernardino and Riverside County courts and those that file cases there.

A proposal increasing state allocations for courts in the future was approved by the California Judicial Council. The new formula to determine the amount will be introduced over the next five years. It is based on each court’s workload and the number of case filings.

The purpose of this proposal is to update the current funding methods, based on assessments from 1997 when California legislatures took over court funding.

Again, this is good news for San Bernardino and Riverside counties. While the courts have gotten extremely busy over the years, the number of judges has not significantly increased – making it difficult to get on the court’s calendar during a reasonable time frame.

State funding would increase in San Bernardino County from $61.3 million to $74.4 million, while in Riverside County it would increase gradually from $57.3 million this year to $66.6 million by 2018.

Currently, there are 86 judges and commissioners in San Bernardino County and 76 in Riverside County – both should have at least 150. Because of the huge caseloads these courts carry and not enough judges to oversee the cases, several courthouses have been closed.
