Peventing Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians need to be especially cautious on our roads because they are more vulnerable to injury or even death.

According to the California Highway Patrol and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, several hundred pedestrian are killed each year in San Bernardino County while thousands are injured. Are you aware that 72 percent of all pedestrian fatalities occur in urban areas and 70 percent occur at night?

California Vehicle Code Section 21950(a) states, “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.”

Lawmakers have now introduced a bill that is designed to help prevent pedestrian accidents among panhandlers. Panhandlers are common in Southern California. They are seen at freeway exits mostly. They either hold up signs or do tricks and ask drivers for money.

This practice can be dangerous because panhandlers just cross the street – sometimes when it is illegal to do so, or when it isn’t safe or perhaps when the light is still red. It’s not only dangerous for them, but for the motorists who must drive around them.

Bill SB674 would affect the California Vehicle Code. It would stop panhandlers by keeping them safe. Of course, panhandler groups and civil rights activists will most probably object to it.

When a pedestrian is injured by a vehicle the results can be devastating. If you or someone you know has been injured in a pedestrian accident, contact the San Bernardino law offices of Welebir | Tierney to learn how you can obtain compensation for your injuries.
