In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of tractor-trailers, semi-trucks and big-rigs on U. S. roads, especially Southern California freeways. Concurrently, there has also been a significant increase in accidents and fatalities related to these trucks.
An accident involving a semi-truck can be extremely devastating, even at low speeds.
Truckers and truck companies must follow very specific rules designed to protect the public and help avoid accidents. Accidents can occur because of:
- Possible driver fatigue
- Logbooks showing that the driver has spent less time on the road than he or she actually did
- Improper truck maintenance
- Improperly loaded cargo
- Inadequate driver training
Perhaps you’ve heard about the 38-year old Fontana woman who was driving with her 5-year old daughter through an intersection with a four-way stop when a semi-truck crashed into her. She was taken to a nearby emergency room where she was pronounced dead shortly after the accident.
The young girl survived but suffered cuts to her forehead, a lacerated spleen and bruising. The semi-truck driver was not injured and his truck suffered minor damage to its front end. The smaller vehicle was totaled, according to a police report.
The truck driver was not arrested; however, the tragic accident is being investigated.
My sincere condolences go out to the family of this young mother whose life was cut short. I wish the little girl a speedy and complete recovery.
