Stop Using This Product

For those who enjoy climbing mountains, please read on.

Crevasse rescue is the process of retrieving a climber from a crevasse in a glacier. Because of the frequency with which climbers break through the snow over a crevasse and fall in, crevasse rescue technique is a standard part of climbing education.

Recently, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Mammut Sports Group, Inc. published a recall regarding their crevasse rescue devices due to the risk of injury. If you own one of these devices, you should stop using the product immediately. According to the manufacturer, the pull cord lock cam can fail, posing a risk of injury or death during a rescue.

The recall involves Mammut’s RescYou crevasse rescue devices with batch numbers 12-12 and 03-13. The device is a pulley system used for mountain climbing to lift a skier or climber who has fallen into a crevasse. It consists of blue and silver finished mechanical ascenders, each using a cam that grabs a lifting rope, allowing the rope to slide only in one direction.

The devices were sold at specialty outdoor stores throughout the United States and Canada and online at the company’s website from June 2013 through January 2014 at about $125. If you have one of these devices, you should stop using it and contact Mammut for a free replacement crevasse rescue device.

As of today, no incidents or injuries have been reported.
