Recall- Children's Lamps

Every year thousands of innocent consumers die and millions are physically injured due to various defective and dangerous products sold in the United States.

The U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that there are between 200 and 300 product recalls made each year. Some of these dangerous and deadly products may include, but are not limited to:

  • Children’s toys, clothing and furnishings
  • Motor vehicles and parts
  • Food and drinks
  • Household appliances
  • Prescription drugs
  • Sporting goods

The U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is committed to protecting the public from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical or mechanical hazard – from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of thousands of consumer products under its jurisdiction.

CPSC works to help ensure the safety of consumer products, including toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters and household chemicals, etc.

Products that have design defects, manufacturing defects, or do not have adequate warning labels may cause the victims to suffer from a wide range of serious long or short-term injuries, including:

  • Back and neck injuries
  • Head trauma
  • Paralysis
  • Scarring and disfigurement
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Death

Most recently, Ikea has recalled children’s wall-mounted lamps that are sold in their stores nationwide, in their catalogs and online at www.ikea-usa.com because of the possibility that children can get entangled in the electrical cord that hangs from these lamps, posing a strangulation hazard.

If you own one of these lamps, you are advised to stop using them immediately, remove them from the wall and contact Ikea for a free repair kit. Do NOT use the lamp until the repair kit is installed. The repair kit has self-adhesive fasteners for attaching the lamp’s cord to the wall as well as safety instructions.

If you or a family member has been injured by a product that you purchased, you can ask for money to pay for current and future medical bills. In addition, you can request money to compensate for pain and suffering, including emotional trauma, for lost wages and for punitive damages as well.

A product liability lawsuit involves injury caused by a defective product. A defective product is one that is not reasonably safe for its intended use, such as the Ikea children’s lamps. Ensure you haveaggressive legal representation so have a favorable outcome.

Companies sued in product liability cases include the manufacturer of the defective product, the wholesaler or distributor of the product and sometimes the retailer of the product. Product liability cases are broken into three different types:

  1. A design defect – the product was manufactured as intended, but it was unsafe
  2. A manufacturing defect – the design of the product was adequate, but this specific product was not made correctly
  3. A failure to warn – the instructions for and warnings about use of the product were inadequate

Along with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there is also the Food and Drug Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that act as watchdogs to ensure that consumers are not subjected to unnecessary risks from items purchased.

When dangerous or defective products pose a risk to public health and safety, companies need to get the word out fast. In order for a product recall to be successful, recall notification of all affected parties is a must.

Keep in mind – a product liability lawsuit is difficult, time-consuming and expensive. It requires experienced attorneys, successful in product liability cases.
